More Americans are becoming obese. Obesity rates inched up 1.1% between 2007 and 2009, according to a new report released by the CDC.
In just the past two years, 2.4 million people have joined the ranks of the obese. About 72.5 million U.S. adults are now obese, the report found. That’s 26.7% of the population, compared to 25.6% in 2007.
Some states are more affected than others, says Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the CDC, who presented the data at a teleconference Tuesday. “The number of states where self-reported obesity is 30% or higher has tripled, from three to nine.”
David Blumenthal, the national coordinator for health information technology for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “defended the administration’s new plans against critics who say the watered-down rules miss an opportunity to lower costs and improve patient care,” The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
“The recently released rules dictate what qualifies as ‘meaningful use’ of electronic medical records, the standard providers must adopt to access the billions in grants available to help them go paperless. The standards seek to strike a balance between encouraging the change without expecting too much from health providers,” Blumenthal told Utah health officials. Read more
The Mayo Clinic is opening a school of social media for health providers, the (Minneapolis-St. Paul) Star Tribune reports. The new “Center for Social Media… [will] train other health care organizations to use Twitter, YouTube and Facebook to connect patients and doctors. The new center will run workshops, offer consulting and host conferences.” The Star Tribune writes that it is an unusual approach for the hospital industry, which is typically worried about the risk of a public relations mistake and prefers more conservative approaches. ” Read more
