A lot of times, it seems like when we experience an exercise related injury that it happens all of a sudden. Over time, we can put a lot of stress on our muscles and joints. Injuries can occur simply from overuse. There are various easy ways to help prevent some common injuries.

Running Injuries

I enjoy running but I do worry about doing it too often to the point that down the road, I will have knee pain or other running related injuries. A few easy ways to help prevent a running injury are:

  • Watch your mileage – it’s not a bad idea to try and improve your distance but it isn’t necessary to run extra miles each week if you’re not ready.

It’s New Year’s resolutions time! Is there anything more inspiring to bring out the runner in you? But before you lace up your shoes and start ticking off the miles, plan to kick things off slowly if you haven’t been running lately. The road does not come without risks.

“Men tend to get injuries from overdoing it,” says former Olympic runner Jeff Galloway, a columnist for Runner’s World magazine and author of Women’s Complete Guide to Running, which he co-wrote with his wife, Barbara. “Women don’t push the envelope as much when they are starting out, but because they have lower bone density, they’re more prone to stress fractures.”

The Washington Post: Health-Care Overhaul’s Individual Mandate Makes All The Difference
Unless someone can drop into Anthony Kennedy’s dreamspace and, “Inception”-style, either figure out what he thinks of the individual mandate or simply tell him what to think of the individual mandate, it’s not worth spending much time speculating on the ultimate legal fate of the provision. The case will eventually make its way to the Supreme Court, and when it does, Kennedy will decide which side has the majority, and until that happens, the various legal decisions are little different from op-ed columns (Ezra Klein, 12/18).

Styblo awared NIH grant to create a Virtual Consortium

Dr. Mirek Styblo, PhD, associate professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, recently received a National Institutes of Health grant to create a Virtual Consortium for Translational/Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (ViCTER). The consortium will be built around Styblo’s existing NIH-funded project titled “Environmental Arsenic and Diabetes Mellitus.” Styblo and his team use a translational approach to characterize the association between chronic exposure to arsenic – a common drinking water contaminant – and diabetes.
