Rachel Stevens, EdD, RN, has received the 2010 President’s Award by the National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH). Stevens is a member of the Chatham County (NC) Board of Health. The award was presented Aug. 11 at the board’s 18th annual conference in Omaha, Neb. Former deputy director of the NC Institute for Public Health, part of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Stevens was a clinical instructor of public health nursing in the School before retiring in 2003. More Americans are becoming obese. Obesity rates inched up 1.1% between 2007 and 2009, according to a new report released by the CDC.
In just the past two years, 2.4 million people have joined the ranks of the obese. About 72.5 million U.S. adults are now obese, the report found. That’s 26.7% of the population, compared to 25.6% in 2007.
Some states are more affected than others, says Thomas R. Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the CDC, who presented the data at a teleconference Tuesday. “The number of states where self-reported obesity is 30% or higher has tripled, from three to nine.”
David Blumenthal, the national coordinator for health information technology for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “defended the administration’s new plans against critics who say the watered-down rules miss an opportunity to lower costs and improve patient care,” The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
“The recently released rules dictate what qualifies as ‘meaningful use’ of electronic medical records, the standard providers must adopt to access the billions in grants available to help them go paperless. The standards seek to strike a balance between encouraging the change without expecting too much from health providers,” Blumenthal told Utah health officials. Read more
