Surprising Results Could Drive One to Drink
Have you heard the joke about people who don’t drink? They don’t actually live longer, it just feels that way.
It turns out the joke may not be so funny after all. A recent study suggests that heavy drinkers live longer than non-drinkers, and moderate drinkers outlive both heavy drinkers and teetotalers.
A University of Texas study to be published in “Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research” found that heavy drinkers had a 42 per cent higher risk of dying than moderate drinkers. Read more
Carolyn Halpern, PhD, associate professor of maternal and child health at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and fellow at UNC’s Carolina Population Center, has received the 2010 Loretta P. Lacey Maternal and Child Health Academic Leadership Award from the national Association of Teachers of Maternal and Child Health. The award recognizes proven leadership skills and the potential for future career development. Halpern was selected for her many accomplishments as a teacher, mentor and researcher in maternal and child health. She is director of the department’s doctoral program, has produced a number of published works and is acknowledged by her students as an outstanding teacher and mentor. Read more
