The wide array of work out DVD content is no different from that of work out videos. The only difference is that some of the DVDs allow you to do the exercise with or without the cheesy music (and with or without the instructor’s eventually-annoying voice). They will all be at least 30 minutes of the instructor demonstrating the fitness movements, but they won’t all have the same mannerisms and degree of intensity as other instructors on other work out DVDs.

Fit Fact: Calorie counts on menus help parents make healthier choices

Can seeing the calories in different foods change your choices? One study says it might, at least for parents making food choices for their kids. A study published in recruited 99 parents who took their toddlers to fast food restaurants on a regular basis. In the study, parents were given a sample McDonald’s menu and asked to choose items for themselves and their kids. Half of the menus included calorie information for each food while the other menus didn’t. The results? The parents who had the calorie information chose an average of 102 fewer calories than the other parents.

That’s a good thing, considering that 100 extra calories a day could lead to a 10-lb weight gain in a year.

A few weeks ago, the YJ staff got a special treat when MC Yogi and Amanda Giacomini stopped by our offices to teach our daily staff yoga class. We don’t usually practice with music here in the offices–mostly because our yoga room is also our conference room and isn’t really set up with a sound system–so I’m always grateful when we have a teacher come in with her own iPod docking station. Of course, we would expect no less from the infamous, self procraimed yoga “unrapper” . . . who came with a big, shiny boom box in tow. Sure, I was skeptical of the whole yoga hip-hop thing at first, but now, I’ll admit it. I’m a fan.

Menopause and Weight Gain – Is It Inevitable?

While I do have some male clients, most of my personal training clients are female and most of them have something in common: They all called me because they’d started to gain weight and, even worse, it seemed to come from nowhere. This weight gain started happening for most of them in their mid-40s and they were mystified. The reason? Most of these women were healthy and fit. They exercised, watched their diets and had always managed to maintain the same weight. For that reason, it was both frustrating and mysterious: Why were they suddenly gaining weight and why was that extra weight showing up around the middle?

Unfortunately, many of them were working their way towards menopause, a time when hormones decline and weird things begin to happen, including weight gain.
