Exercise Good for Knees, Study Finds

March 3, 2011 — Despite some previous research casting doubt on the value of physical activity for the knees, a new study says it’s beneficial for knee joint health.

Researchers in Australia say although it’s true that exercise has been linked to bony spurs called osteophytes, physical activity in general is good for the knees.

“Several studies have already examined the impact of physical activity on the knee as a whole, but none [has] looked at the effect of physical activity on individual parts of the knee,” Flavia Cicuttini, PhD, one of the researchers, says in a statement.

Cicuttini, of the Baker Heart Research Institute and Monash University in Melbourne, says “exercise affects each part of the knee differently, which helps explain why there have been conflicting reports for so long.”

Aug. 8, 2011 — As aspiring football and soccer stars hit the fields for preseason training, there’s new advice on how to keep young athletes safe when exercising in the heat.

New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) show that heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses are preventable in young athletes much in the same way they are in adults.

May 26, 2011 – Walking or performing  physically demanding work on the job helps U.S. adults meet minimum physical activity guidelines that could lead to better health, the CDC says in a new report.

The report is based on a survey of nearly 386,400 U.S. adults who answered questions about their physical activity on and off the job. 

About 64% of participants said they met minimum physical activity guidelines in their free time. That includes 68.5% of men and 60.4% of women.
